Abuja, Nigeria: Friday, March 11, 2022. The first Plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) held at the Bishops’ own headquarters, the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Abuja, was quite momentous. The Conference ran from Saturday, March 05 to Friday, March 11, 2022, a classic communique.
First was the breaking news on the early Sunday morning, March 06, 2022 to be precise, that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has accepted the resignation of His Grace, Most Rev. Dr Anthony Obinna as the Archbishop of Owerri. Sequel to that information is that the Most Rev Dr Lucius Ugorji has been appointed the new Archbishop of Owerri.
Archbishop Ugorji will remain the Apostolic Administrator of Ahiara Diocese.
The weeklong meeting came to one of its climax when the newly appointed Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, was elected the new President of CBCN, taking over from Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, (Benin Archdiocese) whose four year tenure ended.
To assist Archbishop Ugorji as the Vice President is Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso of Kaduna Archdiocese. The new CBCN Secretary is Bishop Donatus Ogun, OSA, of Uromi Diocese, while Bishop Peter Kayode Odetoyinbo of Abeokuta Diocese is the Assistant Secretary.
With these new elections and newly rearranged offices, the Catholic Church of Nigeria has set a strong evangelisation roadmap – for the next four years – towards her mission of incarnating the salvific message of Jesus Christ and bear prophetic witness to God’s Kingdom within the extremely challenging Nigerian landscape, nay, the entire unstable African continent.
